The Heilig Geesthuis almshouse consists of four buildings arranged around a courtyard. In the file, the buildings are designated as follows: front building A, west wing building B, rear building C and east wing building D. After an extensive restoration, the building ensemble will be repurposed as the ‘Huis van het Kind’. The buildings will be adapted to the technical and comfort requirements of the Huis van het Kind, with attention to energy, sustainability, accessibility, child safety and fire safety. The building envelopes of buildings A and C will be thoroughly renovated (repair of the façade facing, replacement or restoration of exterior joinery and replacement of the roof covering). The wooden load-bearing structures, both the upper floors and the roof structure, will be extensively repaired or replaced in both buildings. The interior will be adapted to contemporary comfort requirements, with the complete replacement of all technical systems and the installation of a lift and a new stair core. Where possible, insulation will be installed on the inside. Building C will additionally be provided with a full basement. Building B will be demolished and replaced by a new single-storey volume with a gradually stepped roof playground that connects building sections A and C on the upper floors. The new building B will also be provided with a new underground basement. The courtyard, which will be enlarged through the demolition of building D, will be completely redesigned. The Sint-Pietersvliet behind rear building C, which was filled in at the time, will be reopened and made publicly accessible. The project aims to provide sustainable heating for the Heilige Geestgebouw through a combination of aquathermal energy (heat from surface water) and geothermal energy (BEO field). The use of aquathermal energy forms part of a European Interreg subsidy project, in which the Heilige Geestgebouw serves as a pilot project for sustainable energy in a heritage context. For the aquathermal system, an underground circuit will be created that draws water from the nearby Binnennete at Mosdijk and transports it to the aquathermal heat pump in the technical basement of the Heilige Geesthuis. To construct the Binnennete circuit, an intake and discharge pipe will be installed in a single guided bore between the plot of the Heilig Geestsite and the Binnennete via the plot at Kerkstraat 3-5. At the Binnennete, on the side of the plot at Kerkstraat 3-5, compact stainless-steel heat exchangers will be installed on a new steel structure.
