Opportunity description
This contract aims to carry out an intervention study on the effectiveness of existing preventive measures to reduce exposure to PFAS and heavy metals (at least lead and cadmium) through indoor dust among approximately 100 Flemish families with young children (0-6 years). The focus is on the measure "wet cleaning", but any additional measures or combinations of measures may also be investigated. The study must provide insight into: • the effectiveness of preventive measures for reducing concentrations of PFAS and heavy metals in indoor dust; • the circumstances under which these measures are most effective; • the influence of the frequency, quality and consistency of application of the measures; • the possibilities for refining existing public health advice for citizens. In addition, the contract aims to strengthen the knowledge base regarding indoor dust through: • the development of reference values for concentrations of PFAS and heavy metals in indoor dust; • the further substantiation of a uniform and reproducible sampling methodology (settled dust) for indoor dust compared with outdoor dust. The contractor is responsible for the preparation, implementation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of the study. The contract includes, among other things: • project coordination; • preparation of a research protocol and study design; • Preparation of questionnaires and procedures for participants • development of an intervention strategy; • recruitment of participants; • implementation of the sampling campaign; • laboratory analyses; • statistical analysis and scientific interpretation; • development of reference values for the measurement results; • the further substantiation of a uniform and reproducible sampling methodology for indoor dust; • feedback on the results and support with communication; • final reporting and transfer of the research data. The results of the study must support the Department of Care in the further scientific substantiation of public health advice, communication and policy decisions concerning exposure to chemical substances through indoor dust.
