Opportunity description

Klein Schietveld is part of the Habitats Directive site “Klein en Groot Schietveld”, BE2100016. Restoring the natural hydrology of Klein Schietveld, improving the quality of groundwater-dependent vegetation, restoring and improving the quality of the ponds and riparian zones, and creating connections between the existing populations are some of the priority efforts for the Habitats Directive site. This will be investigated in an ecohydrological study of Klein Schietveld. The ecohydrological study consists of two lots, focusing on: - Lot 1: system study of Klein Schietveld and restoration of the groundwater regime, without compromising critical (military) infrastructure - Lot 2: improving the hydrology and design of the ponds, taking into account the threatened species present Lot 2 forms part of the implementation of development measures for the LIFE project Life Heroes programme Wetlands are among the most threatened ecosystems and the most important carbon stocks in the world. In addition to their unique biodiversity, they provide various ecosystem services, such as water supply, water purification, flood protection, carbon sequestration, climate regulation, production of raw materials and food, tourism and recreation. They also have important aesthetic and cultural value. Within the framework of the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the new EU Nature Restoration Law, LIFE HEROES focuses on restoring and expanding nutrient-poor wetlands in Flanders. Eutrophication, acidification, desiccation, overgrowth and invasive alien species constitute the greatest threats to the decline of the unique fauna and flora (dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians and plants) and the degradation of the most important underground carbon reservoirs in Flanders. LIFE HEROES focuses on ecosystem restoration to address the current biodiversity and climate crisis and restore the ecosystem services of nutrient-poor wetlands. The project provides a very first implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Law by prioritising restoration efforts relating to wetlands and carbon-rich systems. The Life Heroes project focuses on Natura 2000 sites and targets EU habitats (3110, 3130, 3160, 7110, 7140, 7230,91E0) and addresses the main threats to wetlands (eutrophication, drought and invasive species).
