France – Preservation services of exhibits and specimens – Restoration of the monumental paintings by Jan LAVEZZARI

Opportunity description

The purpose of this contract is the restoration of the monumental paintings by Jan LAVEZZARI located at Berck-sur-Mer Town Hall, Rue Henri Elby, 62600 Berck. The City of Berck-sur-Mer is launching a call for tenders to restore the monumental paintings by Jan Lavezzari (1876-1947) located at the Town Hall. These works, created between 1907 and 1909 and listed in the inventory of historic monuments in 1989, depict scenes of maritime life in Berck. Seriously damaged during the bombings of 1944 and having undergone several inadequate restorations, they now exhibit numerous forms of deterioration (lifting, losses, excessive overpainting). The project is divided into two phases: phase 1 (before September 2027) concerns the Salon d'Honneur with 13 paintings (including 5 large-format paintings, mounted on the walls, and 8 vertical-format paintings between the windows), this ensemble represents approximately 64m2, as well as the monumental paintings in the hall and the Escalier d'Honneur, the staircase (canvas mounted on plywood measuring 13.35 m2) and the hall (canvas mounted on plywood measuring 8 m2). Phase 2 (before September 2028) concerns the Mayor's office (large-format paintings mounted on the walls, an ensemble representing approximately 27.58 m2, and a canvas mounted on plywood measuring 7.5 m2 in the office known as the “elected officials' office.” These works are in very poor condition: runs, alteration of the original materials, significant cracks, progressive wear, multiple inadequate previous interventions, and deterioration of the plaster beneath the canvases. The work will include complex interventions. Treatment will involve, if necessary, the removal of certain works, structural consolidation, cleaning, and reintegration of missing areas. Performance arrangements: The service providers must be accredited conservator-restorers. The City of Berck-sur-Mer or its representative, the curator of the Historic Monuments Service of the DRAC Hauts-de-France, and the Curator of Antiquities and Works of Art of the Pas-de-Calais Department will oversee, approve, and accept the work. They must propose a detailed schedule taking into account the constraints of an administrative building open to the public. The interventions may be carried out on site or in a workshop after removal.
