As part of the revitalization of the five villages on the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast mine, the City of Erkelenz intends to comprehensively examine the future development and reuse of the buildings formerly used for sacred purposes in Keyenberg, Kuckum and Berverath. The subject of this invitation to tender is the preparation of a feasibility study for these sacred buildings. The aim is to develop viable prospects for the three deconsecrated and listed buildings, strengthen their special significance as identity-forming places in the reclaimed villages and thereby contribute to the social, cultural and spatial revitalization of the localities. The feasibility study is intended to establish a basis for rethinking the churches and the chapel as potential central spaces of village life and, where appropriate, converting them to a public-interest-oriented, multifunctional use. The scope of work includes the conventional structural and functional assessment of the buildings, the development of a viable operator and sponsorship concept, the examination of possible financing and funding options, the development of use scenarios, and the preparation of an economic viability assessment. The study is to present various options comparatively—from minimally invasive conversion through transformative alterations to scenarios involving integration with new-build components (particularly in conjunction with the planned replacement building for the parish hall in Keyenberg). As part of the feasibility study, it must be examined whether and in what form the three buildings formerly used for sacred purposes can in future serve as so-called "third places" or "fourth places," that is, as easily accessible spaces for meeting, exchange and community participation. In addition, the study is to address the cultural heritage of the buildings and examine which historical and identity-forming elements can be integrated into future uses. It must also be clarified whether and to what extent the deconsecrated churches and the chapel can continue their previous social function in a transformed form and thereby contribute to revitalizing the village community.
