Execution of remediation and securing work on the southern sub-area of the former Blumenthal 11 mine and coking plant in Herne of RAG Aktiengesellschaft. The site of the former General Blumenthal 11 mine and coking plant was used in the past as a mine and coking plant site. Following closure, measures to dismantle the operating facilities were carried out in several stages. Essentially, the above-ground facilities and structures were dismantled to approximately 0.5 m below ground level. The site of the former General Blumenthal 11 mine and coking plant is located in Herne, in the Wanne district, and has a total area of approximately 33 ha. The General Blumenthal 11 site is bounded to the north and northwest by the railway tracks of the Wanne-Eickel main railway station and freight station and of the Wanne-Herne Railway (WHE), respectively. To the east, the site is likewise framed by a railway line and Bielefelder Straße. To the west, it directly adjoins the Herne combined heat and power plant and Kastanienallee. To the southwest, Sennestraße forms the site boundary, and to the northwest, the street Am Böckenbusch. The northern sub-area was already remediated in 2018. The southern sub-area, which is subject to mining supervision, is now likewise to be remediated as part of the final operating plan procedure. The southern sub-area has a total size of 22 ha. For the remediation, local areas of soil contamination will be remediated by means of soil replacement and relocated for secure and permanent deposition in a containment structure (SBW) to be constructed on the southern sub-area. The SBW will be constructed in the north of the southern sub-area, in the area of the main contaminated area of the southern sub-area. This was where the by-product recovery facilities were located, whose use resulted in extensive and deep-seated soil contamination, which will thus be secured in a qualified manner.
