Specialist structural design planning The current planning area lies within this field of tension between the historically reconstructed square setting and functionally characterized additions. The conversion of the Semperoper and its surroundings thus takes place in the context of the sensitive further development of a high-ranking cultural site, in which both heritage conservation and operational requirements must be taken into account. The project comprises the planning and construction of a new building and its subsequent conversion, initially serving as an interim facility for relocated functions of the Semperoper and subsequently being permanently operated as the Semperoper Ballet Center. The background is the necessary comprehensive refurbishment of the listed functional building of the Semperoper, whose structural condition requires extensive renovation. During this approximately two-year renovation phase, usable areas must be relocated, for which the new building is intended as an interim site. The building will be constructed in the highly sensitive historic surroundings between the Semperoper, Zwinger Park and the "Semper zwei" building, within a construction area defined by heritage conservation and urban planning, with maximum dimensions of 26 × 26 m and a height of 18.60 m. The new building must function both as an interim facility and, in its final state, as a ballet center. For this purpose, at stage level it will be connected by bridges to the functional building and temporarily to "Semper zwei" ("weather-protected connection" ). After completion of the renovation, the interim fit-out will be completely dismantled and the building converted into the Ballet Center. In its final state, it will comprise two large ballet studios with a clear height of at least 5.50 m, changing rooms, physiotherapy and fitness rooms, offices, sanitary areas, and the sound studio that is to be permanently relocated. In addition, an opera rehearsal stage will be created with a floor area of approximately 18.80 × 18.80 m, a clear working height of at least 7.50 m, and a revolving stage identical in construction to the main stage ("top edge of revolving stage = finished floor level of rehearsal stage" ). In 2025, an open competition was launched, within the framework of which a total of 20 companies were given the opportunity to submit an architectural design. The submitted entries will be evaluated by a jury at the beginning of September 2026. This independent body will select a winning design, which will subsequently form the technical and substantive basis for developing the award criteria in this procurement procedure. It is intended to structure the procedure so that the commissioned architects will be definitively selected by the end of 2026 and commissioned with the further planning.
