Background and objectives Initial situation: With the introduction of modularized Sheet 100 (April 2024, 2025/02 edition), the regulations changed from the prescribed-formulation approach to the performance concept. Sheet 100 Module A defines an “extremely high” protective life of at least 50 years under corrosivity category C5—going beyond DIN EN ISO 12944. Problem: The 50-year protective life is not scientifically substantiated (no laboratory tests/research). It is based on experience with the old regulations, increased testing requirements, and total coating thickness. Research objective: Verification of the assumed protective life, determination of the correlation between testing requirements and protective life, long-term exposure testing (9 years in Phase 1, up to 53 years in total).
